February is National I Love to READ Month. Here are some things you can do to celebrate the month:
If you have children, check with your child’s school to see if they have anything special planned for I Love to READ Month; many schools do.
The new Spiderwick Chronicles movie is coming out in February. Read the books by Tony DiTerlizzi (4th grade level) before seeing the movie.
Visit our newly re-opened Webber Park Library! North Minneapolis has three great libraries. In addition to Webber Park Library, there’s also North Regional Library and Sumner Library. Check out some books and ask about anything going on for I Love to READ Month.
Read the Camden Community News as a family. Let the children read parts of it to you while you’re fixing dinner or folding laundry.
Get your child interested in a book series. Here are some suggestions along with the approximate reading levels by grade:
Little Bear books (1st-2nd) by Else Minarik
Magic Tree House books (2nd-3rd) by Mary Pope Osborne
Dear America, My America and My Name is America books (4th-6th) by various authors.
As a grand finale to I Love to READ Month, March 2 is “Read Across America Day” as well as Dr. Seuss’ birthday! Read your favorite Dr. Seuss book to a child you know. For a blast from the past, read Dr. Seuss’ Gerald McBoing Boing.
February is also Black History Month. Some book suggestions:
Rosa Parks (2nd) by Wil Mara
Changemaker (5th and up) by W. Harry Davis
Overcoming (adult) by W. Harry Davis
Those last two books are both autobiographies by W. Harry Davis who grew up in North Minneapolis and went on to be a businessman, civil rights activist and a member of the Minneapolis Board of Education.
