Over 3,700 ride in Third Annual Minneapolis Bike Tour
10/01/2009
Perfect September weather ruled the day as 3,780 people rode in the Third Annual Minneapolis Bike Tour on September 20. Cyclists of all ages and abilities riding everything from unicycles to twin recumbents toured Minneapolis' spectacular park system under sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s. Participants experienced the natural wonders, urban charm and historical sites of the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway at their own pace, unhindered by motorized traffic.
The 37-mile course showcased the Chain of Lakes, Minnehaha Creek, Mississippi River, Victory Memorial Parkway and the woodlands of Theodore Wirth Park. The 14-mile short course featured a circuit around Lake of the Isles, Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet.
The tour turned green this year to support environmental sustainability with an assortment of green initiatives: folks used a tap water system from existing water resources to fill their water bottles, used compost bins at rest stops for fruit peels and food waste; and reduced paper and plastic by not using information packets or plastic "goody" bags with flyers.
Bike Tour proceeds benefit the Minneapolis Parks Foundation to support and enhance the park system. The Bike Tour was presented by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, Minneapolis Parks Foundation. For info visit www.minneapolisbiketour.com.
