Northside Housing Fair set for February
By: John Helgeland 01/01/2006
North High School will host the 2006 North Housing and Home Improvement Fair on Saturday, February 18. The housing fair will connect current and prospective homeowners with housing and neighborhood experts who can make their desire to buy, repair, maintain, enlarge or improve a home a reality.
Much like the dream of owning a home, the idea of convening a Northside housing fair has been alive for several years. With the efforts of volunteers from most Northside neighborhoods and several non-profit organizations the event has a firm date set. Originally a spring 2005 date was planned, but with scheduling and logistical issues, they changed the event to February 2006.
With the extra time, the planning committee was able to bring additional resources to the table, resulting in a broader group and more experience. One agency involved is the Center for Energy and Environment (CEE), a nonprofit that offers lending programs through the administration of Neighborhood Revitalization Program funds for over half of the North Minneapolis neighborhoods.
CEE’s Kristin DeGrande was thrilled with the response she has gotten from area residents and businesses regarding the event. “People have been looking forward to this event for many years.” She is proud that CEE is able to lend resources to help with organizing the event and believes it could become an annual event.
CEE is one of several confirmed event sponsors; others include Minnesota Housing Finance Agency, Neighborhood Revitalization Program and Wells Fargo.
The event is free to all Minneapolis residents, and will be open from 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. For info contact Kristin DeGrande at 612-335-5881 or Debbie Nelson at 612-588-1155, or visit the North Housing and Home Improvement Fair website at http://www.northhousingfair.com.
