North Minneapolis Youth Art Show

City Kids Arts, a program within City Kids Co-op After School Enrichment Program, teaches youth to use the arts as a valuable means of expression. As part of this program students will create work for their own exhibition entitled “SELF SPACE VOICE.” Opening night of the exhibit is Friday, May 26, 6-9 p.m. at Homewood Studios, 2400 Plymouth Ave. N., and runs through June 1. The show will highlight the work of young artists in a professional gallery. George Roberts, owner of Homewood Studios, offered his gallery space to the students as an in-kind donation. As an artist, former teacher and long time North Minneapolis resident, the mission of the show goes hand-in-hand with Robert’s dedication to building community through the arts on the North Side. The title of the show, “SELF SPACE VOICE,” represents the exhibition’s three-part theme that investigated youth’s understanding of their personal identities (self), community environment (space) and relationship to greater society (voice).
Self: The “self” part of the show features 70 individually painted canvases, each with a symbol or portrait representing the artist’s understanding of him or her self.
Space: The “space” section includes a student constructed model city suspended from the gallery ceiling interacting with light reflecting mobiles.
Voice: The concept of “voice” is conveyed through a video in which students are given the opportunity to express the concerns on issues they feel affect their daily lives and share their visions for the future.
