North Regional Library gets funds

The Cleveland Neighborhood Association recently donated $7,500 to the North Regional Library for new books, CDs and DVDs. The funds came from the Minneapolis Neighborhood Revitalization Program which designates funds to make the city’s neighborhood better places to live, work and play.

“We are thrilled and grateful for this generous gift from the Cleveland Neighborhood Association,” said Barb Elg, community librarian, North Regional Library. “The neighborhood’s support and participation was invaluable in allowing us to purchase even more relevant and useful materials for our local community, and we encourage our neighbors to check out our newly enhanced collection and look for items with the special Cleveland Neighborhood Association book plates.”

North Regional Library, located at 1315 Lowry Avenue North, recently celebrated a grand reopening after being closed for renovations for two years. Members of the Cleveland Neighborhood Association were involved in the neighborhood advisory team that provided input on the remodeled library.

North Regional Library also recently received the following grants which will benefit patrons: More than $88,000 from the Best Buy Children’s Foundation for Live Homework Help, an online homework help program for students and an evaluation of the game design program at Central and North Regional libraries. The Game Design Studio Literacy Evaluation Project includes funds for game design classes at North Regional from September through May 2008. A two-year grant of $70,000 from the McKnight Foundation to hire a youth development specialist at North Regional Library to develop new youth-focused activities and help create staff training in youth development techniques. A $20,000 grant from the Otto Bremer Foundation to expand world language collection materials at the recently remodeled and reopened East Lake and North Regional libraries. These funds are part of The Friends of the Minneapolis Public Library’s year-long campaign to raise $1 million for the purchase of new books and other learning materials for children, teens and new immigrants.
