Love history? Learn more, share more about Camden’s history

Have you ever wondered things like: How did Shingle Creek get its name? How did Camden look in the 1800s? Was your property in the City of Minneapolis? Or are you a person who just likes history? If you answered yes to any of those questions then you should check out the Camden Community Historical Society.

The Camden Community Historical Society is a small non-profit organization of folks who love Camden history, want to find out more about it and want to share Camden’s history with the rest of the community. The group is informal and the members have various interests in Camden’s history that they want to focus on. Some of our members love to find out more about the farms that were here, the lumber mills, businesses etc., while others are interested in such things as the history of the schools, parks and other public institutions. The members cover a wide range of ages and the amount of time they’ve lived in Camden. Some have lived here all their lives, others moved into Camden and became interested in its history, and still others used to live in Camden and are still interested in its history. Currently we are finishing an 18-month calendar of “Lost Camden” that should be printed by the time you read this article.

The Camden Community Historical Society is always looking for new members. If you are interested in Camden history, or if you have lived in the Camden area a long time and would be willing to share your knowledge of our community with others, we would love to hear from you. The group meets the second Saturday of each month from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at North United Methodist Church, 44th and Fremont Ave. N. If you want to know more about the Camden Community Historical Society stop by one of our meetings, visit www.camdenhistory.org or email bohn@spacestar.net. You may also contact us through the Camden News at 3526 Humboldt Ave. N, Minneapolis, MN 55412 or 521-3060.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank Barb Bistodeau, who even though she can’t come to our meetings since she now lives in another state, has been willing to share her knowledge of Camden history with all of us through her many articles (Behind the Victory Flagpole series) in the Camden Community News.
