Get fresh food in the neighborhood
08/01/2009
You can get fresh, locally grown vegetables, herbs and flowers right here in the neighborhood. The Camden Farmers Market at 44th and Penn is open every Thursday from 3-7 p.m., rain or shine, until October. Attendance has already been impressive - average attendance last year was 130 shoppers per week, and this year it is already at 200. On July 23 they had close to 300 people at the market. The organizers (Victory Neighborhood and The Warren) and farmers are thrilled! At the end of each market day, the organizers get a donation from the farmers for the Second Harvest food bank. Last year they donated over a ton of fresh produce to Second Harvest.
Soon they will have a flower vendor. They did have a strawberry vendor but she sold out in 10 minutes - hopefully more will come. Pictured left is an example of the "Best of the Market" box. Each farmer takes a turn each week and creates a box that has a mixture of vegetables and charges only $5. This is for the customers who would like a variety of things and great for people who have small families or live alone. Keep in mind that the contents will change with the growing season. Fresh locally grown tomatoes are coming soon too! So skip the huge grocery stores and get fresh food that tastes good right here in Camden. (Photos by Duane Atter.)
