Get comfort food, with a twist
By: Connie Beckers 05/01/2011
Folks have been asking for over a year now, “When is that restaurant on Lowry going to open?” I met with Darryl Weivoda, owner of The Lowry Café and North End Hardware, and Executive Chef and General Manager of The Lowry Café, Steve Swinney recently. And while they’re guarded about committing to a firm opening date, due to pending inspections, they are hoping for the first week of May. Watch for updates on The Lowry Café Facebook page.
The idea for the restaurant started brewing in late 2008 with the acquisition of the building at 2207 Lowry Ave. N. Weivoda’s objective is to help create a strong and diverse business node at Lowry and Penn. He grew up on the Northside and counted more than 45 businesses on this corner in the late 1980s, but today there are just 13, counting The Lowry Café. With future revitalization planned for the northside of Lowry and Penn, we are not far from the reality of a vibrant business district once again.
Located on the south side of Lowry between Metro Check Cashing and The Goddess of Glass & Friends, The Lowry Café will feature comfort food with a twist. Classics like meatloaf, pork chops and design your own omelets will be made from scratch with fresh ingredients including the dressings and sauces, fresh coffee by B&W, and breads from the Franklin Street Bakery. Swinney’s “make it nice or make it twice” motto ensures you’ll get a delicious meal every time.
Customers will enjoy an art show by Northside artists while dining as well. The first show features watercolors by Bryn Mawr resident Pat Waddick. Pat is also the architectural designer of The Lowry Café. The shows will change regularly and are managed by Connie Beckers, next door at The Goddess of Glass & Friends. Again, watch the Facebook page for reception announcements.
Chef Steve has hired the majority of his 20 staff from North Minneapolis and is excited to be a part of the community. The Lowry Café will be sign-language and child-friendly, and free wi-fi will help you stay in touch with the virtual world. The walls will feature local artists with a reception evening. And there will be family nights, Twins games on the television and special date nights.
The Lowry Café, will be open seven days a week with Sunday thru Tuesday hours of 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. for breakfast, lunch and Sunday brunch, and Wednesday thru Saturday for dinner until 9 p.m. Have a glass of wine or beer with your meal and enjoy!
Both Darryl and Steve, along with neighboring businesses, share the excitement expressed by the community for a new Northside dining venue. Darryl would like to thank all the city and neighborhood people who helped in the process, “You know who you are.”
