Food drive honors 2010 ML King Celebration Living the Dream

The “Feed the Dream” food drive is underway at Minneapolis recreation centers to benefit the Greater Lake Country Food Bank, Inc. (GLCFB) of Minneapolis. Collection is through Saturday, January 16. The drive is sponsored by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board’s (MPRB) Diversity Council and Youthline in conjunction with the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.
Non-perishable food items will be collected at the following parks: Creekview – 5001 Humboldt Ave. N, 612-370-4965; Farview – 621 29th Ave. N, 612-370-4922; North Commons – 1801 James Ave. N, 612-370-4921; and MPRB Headquarters – 2117 West River Road N.
The food drive honors Hy Rosen, the 2010 recipient of the Martin Luther King Jr. “Living the Dream” Award. Rosen is executive director and founder of GLCFB. Established in 1980, GLCFB was the Twin Cities’ first large scale community food bank. Its mission is to serve as a central clearinghouse for surplus food inventories to provide food for seniors and residents with disabilities in Hennepin County. The MPRB’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration will be held on Monday, Jan. 18, from 6-7 p.m. at ML King Park, 4055 Nicollet Ave. S. The program features the Stepping Stone Theatre and the “Living the Dream” award presentation. Refreshments follow program. The event is free. Call 612-370-4908 for info.
