Thirty-one years of volunteering

Bob Riley has volunteered for the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board coaching youth basketball for 31 years. He has primarily worked with girls' teams at Folwell Park, but has had his share of experience with co-ed teams as well. He has volunteered in various other communities in Minneapolis (Creekview and Webber Parks) in addition to youth serving agencies outside of our park system (Cooper High School in Robbinsdale and Birch Grove Elementary School in Brooklyn Park).
Bob's dedication to youth, and in particular the growth of girls' athletics, is exemplary. He incorporates life lessons into his coaching style, and has had a hand in the physical and social development of innumerable young athletes. His volunteerism is beyond admirable and the hours he and his family have shared with our park system are countless.
Bob was recently selected to receive a Breaking Barriers Award for his positive impact and contributions towards providing athletic opportunities for girls and women of all races, all ages and all levels of abilities. These awards are presented annually at the Minnesota Girls and Women in Sports Day Celebration, which is held at the State Capitol Rotunda. This year, the event is Tuesday, February 1 at noon. National Girls and Women in Sports Day is a time to celebrate the accomplishments in girls and women's sports, to recognize our state's leaders and athletes, and to look to the future. More than 200 people from across the state are anticipated to attend this hour-long rally.
Bob's coaching career in the metro area has come to an end, as he has retired to the St. Louis area. Although we are happy to share his talents with the youth of his new community, his presence will certainly be missed in ours. His dedication and services over the years have been truly priceless.
