Annual Riverfest and Heritage Day Event

We invite neighbors far and wide to join us for an exciting day of celebrating the Mississippi River and our rich local history for the 7th Annual Riverfest and Heritage Day event on Saturday, September 17 from 1-5 p.m. at Carl Kroening Interpretive Center, 4900 Mississippi Court N.

Amid the rustling cottonwood leaves, along the banks of the Mississippi, residents will be able to meet Jacques, the Voyageur, a French fur trader and river voyageur whose adventurous tales and artifacts of his trading and river journeys will bewilder and enthrall adventurers of all ages!

History teaches us that “Flashmobs” are nothing new to Minnesotans either! This year we are honored to feature the rich history and resonating energy of Minnesota Community Sings* to the Haybale Theater. As early as the 1920s, four to five thousand people used to come together and even compete at neighborhood community sings! We invite you to join us and help us celebrate and recreate a piece of history by sharing in a unique, exciting and historic community sing along event on the banks of the Mississippi River!  We’ll sing a wide variety of songs together, led by songleaders Bret Hesla and Mary Preus of Minnesota Community SINGS. We’ll also present a fun look back at the story of the massive community sings of the 1920s and ‘30s right here in our neighborhood. At a community sing, everyone is welcome. There is no audience: we all are the main attraction. Come join us, and experience the joy of singing together just for fun.

We have new games and art activities planned for the whole family to enjoy including making cornhusk dolls, rope and shingle making, cider pressing, building a log home, hayrides, and other activities and crafts for all ages.

Admission is $5 per person (children under 3 free) includes picnic lunch (hot dog, chips, beverage), local history provided by Mississippi Courts Historical Society, Camden Historical Society and the Brooklyn Historical Society. Hurry and preregister today by calling 763-694-7694! Shuttle will be leaving from Jenny Lind Parking lot at 51st and Dupont Ave. N throughout the event.
