A word of caution about USI Wi-Fi

After reading Jerry Johnson’s rave review about the city Wi-Fi in the April Camden News, I figured it would be wise to issue a brief word of caution. Jerry’s right, you can’t beat the price of the service, but maybe you get what you pay for. I’ve read enough individual reviews like Jerry’s to know there are a lot of people getting great Internet speeds and customer service from USI Wireless, but I feel it might be wise to let people know that is not always the case.
I signed up for the service as soon as it became available and have had the service for a couple months. I asked a number of questions about the quality of the service before paying for a year of service, eager to avoid dealing with spotty service as they worked out the kinks.
Unfortunately, I’ve been extremely disappointed with USI Wireless during the time I’ve had the service. I signed up for the 1mbps service and I rarely get even half that speed. Not only that, but the Internet will frequently cut in and out. I was told this is due to interference from one of the “cameras” (or shot spotters) that the city set up. They are working with me to get a decent signal, but in the mean time I’m dealing with customer service and the hassle of spotty Internet.
I hope you’ll find the city’s Internet to be a great deal, and also a good service. I just recommend checking with a close neighbor who’s already signed up and used the service to see if they’ve had any problems before canceling your current ISP.
